Justin
Koppelman is the Program Coordinator for
Student Civic Engagement in the Department
of Student & Campus Life at Chapman
University (Orange, CA). Through this role,
he collaborates with faculty, staff, and
students to facilitate educational
experiences for students focused on civic
engagement, leadership, service, and
sustainability. Justin has been certified by
Youth Service California as a
Service-Learning Coach.
In the area of service, Justin serves as a
main point of contact and resource for
Chapman faculty, staff, and students seeking
service and/or service-learning
opportunities in the community. He oversees
the University’s co-curricular community
service programs, including the Chapman Day
of Service and other one-time service
experiences, alternative spring break trips,
and the University’s community partner
database. Justin also serves as an
instructor for LEAD 325: Civic Engagement
Initiative, a Service-Learning travel course
that examines various leadership models and
theories (relational leadership, servant
leadership, and the social change model of
leadership) through the lens of the
Hurricane Katrina disaster. He has
facilitated trainings on a range of topics
related to Service-Learning, including
Service-Learning 101, preparing students for
service, facilitation methods, best
practices/principles of community
partnerships, and effective approaches to
reflection.
Justin is a member of the National
Association of Student Personnel
Administrators (NASPA), is a member of
NASPA’s Sustainability Knowledge Community,
and is recognized by Orange County
Coastkeeper as a Watershed Hero. He has
completed Safe Space training on his campus
and has completed OC Human Relations’ Human
Relations 101 training to build
understanding and respect among diverse
communities. Justin received his Master of
Arts degree in English Literature from
Chapman University and is a founding,
ex-officio member of Chapman University’s
Faculty Senate Environmental Committee.
