Spirit of Giving is a service-learning
experience that provides students in
low-income communities with backpacks filled
with school supplies, books and toy. More
than the tangible gifts, the goal of the
program is to teach children to be giving
people through example, stories and a
specialized curriculum. Volunteer
storytellers read stories about giving to
the students. Then the children are asked to
"pay it forward" by volunteering their
services at school, in their neighborhood,
or by performing an act of kindness in their
home or family environment.
Participating schools for 2009 include
Esther E. Walter, Danbrook, Jefferson, and
Lord Baden Powell in Anaheim; Skylark in
Garden Grove; Finley in Westminster;
Arbolita in La Habra; Oak View in Huntington
Beach; Jordan in Orange; Melrose in
Placentia; and John. F. Kennedy, Garfield,
Diamond, Lowell, Heninger, Theodore
Roosevelt, and Pio Pico in Santa Ana.
